‘Most dreams are without colour, or else are only partially or feebly coloured.’ ~ Aldous Huxley
‘It often feels like we’re in the winter of humanity, unconsciously consuming ourselves into nihility in the pursuit of something unimaginatively meaningless – like a bad dream. Dark satanic mills, in all their destruction of nature and human relationships, have since been replaced by server farms and data centres. Sinister in its anodyne aloofness, a restless hum pervades humankind fragmented globally via the hypnotic radiance emanating from millions of screens serving an all-seeing eye: a prophet for the annihilation of all that is beautiful. Kandinsky spoke of art as raising us up from the dark, soulless life towards the non-material strivings of the spirit. While I acknowledge having ideals in art in this day and age is somewhat ridiculous, it’s not half as dumb as, for example, conceptual art: the assumption that man is somehow in conscious control of his destiny (not to mention being a tad authoritarian in outlook). On the one hand, these are drawings born of melancholy, and yet take their cue from Tove Jansson’s wonderfully ethereal illustrations of the Moomins to Paul Klee’s “Taking a line for a walk.” Re-enchantment is resistance, as spring follows winter.’ ~ Percival Alexander
